The Fuch’s Overdrive Supreme 50 UA plugin works pretty well in a pinch.

2013

Sometimes I record a guitar direct, and then spend time tweaking out on guitar amp emulations. This one from Fuch’s and Universal Audio is pretty convincing.

As a caveat, to run this version of the plugin, you’ll need to purchase any one of the UA Apollo interfaces (rack or desktop), or one of the UAD-2 cards (ie. Octo). It’s a little bit of an investment to get into Universal Audio. I’m all in – with one Apollo Twin MKII Quad desktop interface, and a couple of UAD-2-OCTO cards loaded. But to get in, just take a look at the Apollo Solo, and then you can pick up amp plugins a la carte. I haven’t checked my Waves bundle to see if there’s an equivalent.

For the Fuch’s, the clean/crunch tones are mostly what I steer toward with this plugin. The recording chains and delay section is also very useful and customizable.

The recording chains section alone has a staggering number of mic’d cab speaker emulations.

The best part – wait for it – you’ve come up with this incredible tone, and you can save it as a preset. It’ll show up in the preset dropdown. The Fuch’s Overdrive Supreme 50 already has great pre-programmed presets, but why not craft your own?

Spent most of his life having a love affair with guitar (and gear).
